In the previous chapter, Mark 7 we have an interesting link to bread and crumbs : 

27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread and to cast it unto the dogs.
28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs

In verse 19 of this chapter, we have 12 baskets of crumbs from 5 baskets, and in verse 20 seven baskets of crumbs from 4,000

The section is about feeding in the wilderness, could it be that these collected crumbs are symbolic of the Gentiles, who are about to be fed on that much-needed spiritual food of the word?
